A deadly attack on Bui District in Arewa Local Government Area of Kebbi State has resulted in the killing of 33 people, the Nigeria police in the State confirmed.

CSP Bashir Usman, the Command’s spokesperson, disclosed this in a statement issued on Friday, describing the incident as a coordinated assault by suspected Lakurawa terrorists.

Local sources revealed that the attackers stormed villages in the remote border district, opening fire on residents in what survivors described as highly organised and indiscriminate shootings.

The assault reportedly sent panic across the communities, forcing many residents to flee their homes as gunmen moved from house to house shooting at civilians.

Residents said the attackers struck in the early hours, catching villagers off guard and leaving dozens dead and several others injured.

Confirming the incident, Usman said security operatives had intensified operations in the area to prevent further attacks and track down those responsible.

Said he: “In response, the Command, in collaboration with the military and other security agencies, has deployed additional personnel and operational assets to the affected area. Sustained area domination patrols are currently underway to restore and maintain stability”.

The police Command expressed deep regret over the loss of lives and extended condolences to the bereaved families and the wider Arewa community.

The statement added that preliminary investigations indicate that the suspected Lakurawa militants invaded Bui District with the intention of rustling cattle before the situation escalated into a deadly attack on residents.

Security agencies assured residents of their commitment to restore peace in the area, urging members of the public to remain calm and provide useful information that could aid ongoing investigations.
